Description

3 years after the introduction of the Health & Safety at Work Act 2015, WorkSafe are increasingly active in enforcing the obligations of responsible persons to provide a safe working environment.  Prosecutions and enforcement orders act after the event and increase fear.  Safety, like quality, has never been introduced into a system through punishment.  Slogans such as Safety First or Zero Harms raise concerns without providing guidance on how to achieve the result of all workers going home safe.  They do not provide a method.

Doing the same things and hoping for a different result or doing nothing and hoping no harm will happen are not options most want to take.    Without advice on how to achieve different outcomes people are left with little choice, other than working harder or buying or copying a solution that may have worked elsewhere, such as online reporting or more signage.

A different solution will come from learning and applying new knowledge not rehashing old.  In effect being better at doing good things well will come by working smarter, not harder.
